Promote Your Business by Donating to the Parish Picnic

We are having our 7th Annual Parish Picnic, on Sunday, September 8, 2013, at Ignatius Jesuit Centre.  We anticipate having approximately 400 parishioners attend the picnic.  The volunteer committee that plans the picnic each year is currently seeking donations that can be used for door and raffle prizes at our event. Donors will be recognized and advertised in our parish bulletin. If you would like to support the picnic in this way, please contact Mark Sammut at 519-836-6214 or the parish office at 519-824-3951.

Parish Golf Tournament is Fun for All

On June 2nd, Church of Our Lady held its annual parish golf tournament.  The golfing was followed by a dinner.  Thanks to Peggy Moore for these pictures, and to all the member of the organizing committee for their hard work putting this great event together.  It was well attended and a lot of fun.

After two years as Associate Pastor at Church of Our Lady, Associate Pastor Fr. Peter Golinski is moving to a new role.  On June 23rd, parishioners got together to thank Fr. Peter for his service and to wish him well. Fr. Parish Appreciation Night Well Attended

The Church of Our Lady has relied on volunteers since before its founations were laid, and the loving handiwork of the faithful who came before us is evident everywhere you look inside our beautiful church.  On April 23rd, a Parish Appreciation Night was held the church hall to honour the contributions of volunteers and celebrate the history of the church.  Father Jacques Monette S.J, spoke about the key role played by the Jesuits at Church of our Lady over an 80 year period.   The event was very well attended.

Visit from former Pastor, Fr. Ted Hughes

The 125th Committee was pleased to welcome former pastor, Father Ted Hughes as a guest homilist at our week-end masses on February 16th and 17th. Fr. Hughes now works with inmates in Canada’s prisons, and he spoke during his homily about inmates who find great comfort in attending Mass. He told a story about one inmate for whom Mass was the only time during his week when he felt like a regular person.

Pasta Dinner Held to Celebrate 125th Anniversary

On Sunday, February 12, 2013, two hundred parishioners sat down to a Pasta Dinner catered by Nick Finoro and his family. The menu included pasta, meatballs, sausages, salad, bread, dessert, coffee and tea.  This event was planned in celebration of The Church of Our Lady Immaculate 125th Anniversary celebration.  A wonderful evening of food, fun and friendship was enjoyed by all.  Father Noon began the evening with grace and ended it with a thankyou, inviting the children to take home a centrepiece to give to their mothers for Mother's Day.

Feedback on the Marriage Prep Course

Twice a year, volunteers from Church of Our Lady run a weekend course for engaged couples.  The course includes guest speakers on sexuality and financial planning, a talk from Fr. Noon about marriage and spirituality, and lots of hands-on exercises designed to get couples talking about topics like communication, families or origin, and goal setting.   Here are some comments we received from couples who attended the last session.

It was very useful to talk to your future spouse about things you wouldn’t normally talk about.  The facilitators were very real and down to earth.

Catholicism Videos Very Popular

The Catholicism Series is a set of ten one-hour videos produced by an American priest and theologian named Fr. Robert Barron. Each video deals with an important theme in our Catholic faith. One episode explores the importance of Mary, for example. Another talks about how challenging it can be to understand the true nature of God. The series includes beautiful video of locations from around the world as well as insightful and often surprising commentary from Fr. Barron. This past fall, parishioners from Church of Our Lady got together to watch an episode a week for five weeks, and to chat informally about the issues raised.

Knights of Columbus Looking for New Opportunities and New Members

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men's fraternal organization that was formed originally to provide insurance for widows and orphans of deceased members. Since its founding, the scope of the organization has increased to include raising funds for charitable works, supporting vocations, scholarships, and being active in promoting Catholic values, such as the right to life.  Knights from the Church of Our Lady Immaculate form the majority of the membership of Council 1507, one of the oldest councils in Canada, which recently celebrated its 100th year anniversary.

Church of Our Lady Immaculate: Year of Celebration

On October 10,1888 with almost two thousand people in attendance, the Church of Our Lady was dedicated by Bishop Dowling of Peterborough.  Our church was built by the generosity, sacrifice and labour of poor immigrant settlers of Guelph.  Last year, the 125th Committee chaired by Joe Carere began plans to celebrate the construction of this church, with a focus on the spiritual, historical, social and inspirational importance of the church building and the parish community.
